The company is based in the village of Candeleda, Valle del Tiétar, at the southern slope of Sierra de Gredos, nearby Extremadura. A superb area for birding! The local guides are ecologists with experience in developing research and conservation projects. Papageno Birding offers guided birding tours in the Tiétar Valley and the Sierra de Gredos, a protected area with outstanding scenery and biodiversity thanks to its well-preserved habitats.

On the birding tours you will find all kinds of habitats ranging from Steppe-lands, Mediterranean forests, open woodlands and scrub, dense coniferous and decidious forests to high alpine areas up to 2592 m.a.s.l, the highest point of the Iberian Central Range. All these different biomes make it one of the areas in Spain with the greatest diversity of birds including Iberian endemisms as the Iberian Azure-winged Magpie Cyanopica cooki, Spanish Imperial Eagle Aquila adalberti, Bluethroat L.s. azuricollis, Black Redstart P.o. aterrimus, Pied Flycatcher P.h. iberiae and Iberian specialities representing all or nearly the entire European population such as the Iberian Chiffchaff Phylloscopus ibericus, Iberian Green Woodpecker Picus sharpei, Iberian Grey Shrike L.m. meridionalis, Iberian Yellow Wagtail M.f. iberiae, Black Wheatear O.l. leucura, Black-bellied Sandgrouse P.o. orientalis, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse P.a. alchata, Great Bustard Otis tarda, Little Bustard Tetrax tetrax, Thekla lark G.t. theklae, etc.

Observations of a wide range of raptors in the area include the Black-shouldered kite Elanus caeruleus, Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus, Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus, Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus, Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus, Lesser Kestrel Falco naumanni, Bonelli´s Eagle Aquila fasciata, Short-toed Snake-eagle Circaetus gallicus, European Honey-buzzard Pernis apivorus, etc.

Moreover, reservoirs and other waterbodies at lower areas support a great variety of birds, especially waterfowl in winter and waders on passage.

Ornithological Marathon in Sierra de Gredos

Fun and learning in nature with your family, your partner or your friends: Participate on Sunday 22 March in a unique marathon trying to identify as much birds as possible.

maraton ornitologicoOrganized by Algakon in collaboration with the regional government of Castille-Leon (Active Tourism Competitiveness Plan), the marathon aims to promote knowledge and appreciation of birds, in order to contribute better to their conservation.

The marathon takes place in two different villages: You can start either in Arenas de San Pedro or in Candeleda. There is only one condition: YOu need to inscribe your group which consists of at least 2 persons. Inscription (free of charge) can be made the day of the marathon (22 March) from 9 to 11.30 am at the town hall of Candeleda or the town hall of Arenas de San Pedro. There you will be given all necessary information and documentation.

Immediately thereafter you can start the marathon. Depending on the available time (the marathon finishes at 2 pm), you can choose the route that suits you best. And: If you deliver your results before 2 pm, you’ll be greeted with a prize!
